Fine-line designs are not simply normal drawings made with very thin marks. Tattoo-conscious design involves proportion, composition and enough visual breathing room for the subject to remain readable.
Three things to notice
Look first at the subject silhouette, then the balance of the composition, and finally the space between important lines. If a design only works when enlarged on a screen, its fine detail may be difficult to appreciate at its intended size.
Keep the final size in mind
A restrained drawing often communicates more clearly than one filled with tiny textures. A professional practitioner must also consider skin, placement and whether a proposed design is suitable for tattooing.
Inside the full learning programme
Our planned Fine Line Design Foundations course will expand on line hierarchy, placement, botanical composition, proportional accuracy and original drawing exercises. Detailed practice sheets are not part of this free article.
